Job – Geothermal Scientist/ Hydrogeologist, BGS, England

The British Geological Survey (BGS) is seeking to hire a Geothermal Scientist / Hydrogeologist, based at either the BGS offices in Edinburgh or the BGS headquarters in Keyworth, Nottingham.

• Appointment will be at UKRI Pay Band D (GBP31,931 – GBP34,709)
• Full-time – 37 hours a week (a range of flexible working options may be available including hybrid working, which BGS is currently trialling
• Permanent appointment

Role Purpose:

The role requires a scientist with strong numerical/ modelling skills to join the team of BGS geothermal energy researchers, working across a range sites and projects, including the UK Geoenergy Observatories. Supporting a growing portfolio of geothermal energy projects, you will provide geothermal, hydrogeological, and modelling expertise to existing projects as well as develop new research ideas and collaborations. Duties include:

Main Duties: 

• Contribution to different geothermal research and commercial projects in BGS, including the Clean Power: Heat-Cool topic, Energy Storage topic and UK Geoenergy Observatories
• Borehole/well field data collection, designing and implementing environmental monitoring strategies/ resource characterisation/resource sustainability programmes for different geothermal systems
• Developing and applying groundwater/mathematical models, and data analysis techniques to understand fluid flow and heat transport in different hydrogeological / geothermal systems
• Lead and contribute to the development of new research ideas and projects, and external income
• Building connections across a range of projects and identify opportunities for collaboration within/ across BGS as well as with external partners (e.g., Local authorities, The Coal Authority, the International Energy Agency, Universities, public bodies and regulators and industry)

Qualifications – essential:

• Educated to 2:1 in relevant degree, and EITHER have an MSc in a relevant subject (hydrogeology, hydrology, geology, environmental sciences) and significant (>3 years) relevant industry experience OR PhD in a subject relevant to this post (S)
• Valid driving licence and a willingness to drive as part of the role (S)

Knowledge and Experience – essential

• Practical hydrogeological field-based experience including in borehole/well field hydrogeology/thermal data collection (S&I)
• Experience in setting up and maintaining equipment for monitoring e.g., water levels, temperatures, discharge (S&I)
• Record of scientific writing preferably, but not exclusively, in the peer-reviewed literature (S)
• Broad knowledge of hydrogeological and heat transport processes (S&I)
