Job – PostDoc Geothermal Energy, Great Basin Center, Reno, Nevada

The Great Basin Center for Geothermal Energy (GBCGE) within the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology (NBMG) at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) invites applications from qualified candidates to fill a Postdoctoral Scholar position.

NBMG is a public service unit within the College of Science at UNR and serves as the state geological survey for Nevada. This full-time position will support the International Geothermal Capacity-Building Project, funded by the U.S. Department of State.

The project involves capacity-building activities for foreign government partners in the Asia-Pacific region, including delivering workshops and presentations, collaborative research, peer to peer exchanges, provision of technical advice, and conducting geothermal resource assessments in country.

For this project, the post-doctoral scholar will be responsible for leading the design and application of novel geothermal exploration techniques and workflows (e.g., geostatistical tools and geothermal play fairway analysis) to complete geothermal prospectivity and resource assessments in collaboration with our foreign government partners.

The scholar will manage the compilation, synthesis and cataloguing of existing geoscientific datasets in our partner countries and support the development of updated conceptual models of geothermal systems. Additionally, the scholar will play a central role in training foreign geoscientists in geothermal exploration best practices via in-person workshops and virtual webinars, and through development of customized training materials and presentations.

Some international travel is likely (estimated to be no more than ~3 weeks/year, and contingent on an improved COVID situation).

The position requires substantial teamwork and interactions with other GBCGE personnel and foreign government partners. We are therefore seeking candidates with excellent inter-personal skills, well-developed communication skills, ability to meet project deadlines, and demonstrated ability to work effectively in formal and informal teams with individuals from diverse communities, cultures and nationalities. The successful applicant will be joining a vibrant, motivated team in the GBCGE who are dedicated to geothermal science, innovation, education and knowledge transfer. The team includes graduate students, research scientists and faculty from within the NBMG and the Department of Geological Sciences and Engineering.

Required Qualifications

PhD in geology, geochemistry, geophysics, hydrogeology, or related field by time of appointment.
