Position for: FG IV Scientific/Technical project officer @ The Joint Research Centre (JRC) is the European Commission’s in-house science service.
The Joint Research Centre’s mission is to provide EU policies with independent, evidence-based scientific and technical support throughout the whole policy cycle. Working in close cooperation with policy Directorates-General, the JRC addresses key societal challenges while stimulating innovation through developing new methods, tools and standards, and sharing its know-how with the Member States, the scientific community and international partners. The Energy Technology Policy Outlook Unit of the Institute for Energy and Transport, comprising of about 50 staff, supports the development, implementation and monitoring of the Energy Union’s policy priorities through techno-socio-economic assessments and modelling and by leading the Commission’s Strategic Energy Technologies Information System (SETIS). The Contract Agent will contribute to the analysis and assessment of geothermal energy prospects in the power, heating and cooling sectors including research and innovation aspects. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with colleagues within the Institute and other Institutes of the JRC. The tasks will include:
Contributions to the assessment of the current state of geothermal energy including technological issues, resources and socio-economic aspects as well as barriers towards further deployment.
- Follow-up developments in energy policy related to geothermal energy technologies in the power and heating/cooling sectors
- Contributions to collection and validation of technosocio-economic data and market developments with direct relevance to the geothermal energy
- Contributions to the dissemination of scientific research, including the preparation of reports and publications for peer-reviewed journals.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate should have a completed university degree in engineering, economics or geosciences of at least three years attested by a diploma and at least five years of professional experience in energy/power research and/or analysis. Alternatively, the candidate should have a PhD degree preferably with research experience in relevant fields. Prior knowledge in geothermal energy and/or techno-socio-economic assessment of energy technologies is considered an advantage. Good knowledge of the MS Office suite, GIS-based systems and data management and visualisation skills would be also an advantage.
Very good command of English and writing skills (supported by a publications list), are essential.

Indicative duration – 12 months initial contract with possible renewals up to maximum 6 years
