KenGen focused on delivering 83.3 MW Olkaria I Unit 6 geothermal plant within next 12 months

KenGen continues its geothermal development efforts with a focus on delivery of additional 83.3 MW in capacity through its Olkaria I Unit 6 geothermal project, as well as the upgrade of the Olkaria I geothermal plant and the ongoing procurement process for the 140 MW Olkaria VI geothermal project to be developed under a PPP structure.

Speaking during Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) inaugural Energy Café, Managing Director & CEO, Mrs. Rebecca Miano unveiled an ambitious renewable energy project pipeline. With the activities, the company is focused on supporting the Kenyan government’s agenda on economic growth.

The focus of KenGen in the next 12 months lies in the completion of its 83.3 MW geothermal development of the Olkaria I Unit 6 project.  So far the company has drilled mre than 310 wells to support the utilisation of geothermal energy for Kenya.

Procurement activities for the redevelopment of the Olkaria I geothermal plant aimed at increasing the current capacity from 45 MW to 50 MW and extend its life by 25 years is in final stages. We reported about the shortlisting of four companies for a PPP implementation of the development of the 140 MW Olkaria VI geothermal project.

The company though continues working on additional hydro, wind and natural gas development, but is also evaluating the feasibility of installing a Municipal Waste to Energy Power Plant.

KenGen is also continuing its business diversification efforts, with a focus on non-energy generation revenue sources including drilling, consultancy, operations and maintenance services and training by leveraging on its resources, mainly equipment and technical skills.
