Kenya Olkaria geothermal field attractive for international visitors

According to local news, the Olkaria geothermal power plant has been receiving a lot of high profile visitors from diverse areas of the world that boast the success and the benefits of said power plant for the country and the industry as a whole.

The same local source states that among the high-profile visitors include the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, who expressed his satisfaction at the efforts made at the facility to manufacture clean energy. “The government of Kenya’s efforts to ensure that all that it generates is clean and is put to proper use is a clear indication that they care about environmental conservation,” said Mr Ban. “It is impressive, since it not only showcases the importance of renewable energy and climate change, but also portrays the important aspect of partnership and development.It is among a growing number of examples of how the United Nations, the World Bank, donor governments and the private sector are supporting forward-looking public policies that can help to reduce poverty and lay the foundations for a sustainable future,” he added.

The United Nations Secretary General was not the only visitor, Tanzanian President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete also mentioned that following the sucess of Olkaria, he is inclined to explore the potential of geothermal in his country. Other visitors include Members of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), former Ethiopian Prime Minister, the late Meles Zenawi, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Vice president Mr Tsueno Kurokawa, The World Bank’s Vice President for Africa, Ms Obiageli Ezekwesili and Members of parliament from Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania and Gambia have also visited the site.
