Kenya with target of 146 wells drilled and 1,100 MW installed by 2018/19
Kenya’s Ministry of Energy and Petroleum has released some ambitious targets for geothermal development in Kenya, with up to 146 wells to be drilled by 2018/19 and 1,100 MW to be installed by then.
In a recent programme overview, the Treasury of Kenya provided details on the actual achievements and targets set by the different ministries in Kenya.
As part of the reporting by the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, details on the geothermal achievements for the 204/205 period have been presented.
In this period, Kenya has delivered on the following:
- 4 geothermal geophysics reports have been delivered
- 11 geothermal wells have been drilled, with a steam equivalent of 31 MW
- 225 MW of geothermal power generation went online
As part the report, the Ministry also provides details on the targets (2015/6, 2016/17, 2017/18 and 2018/19):
- 4 geothermal physics reports to be delivered each year
- 14 wells drilled in 2015/16 and 44 wells each year for 2016-2019
- 70 MW of steam equivalent for 2015/16, 220 per year thereafter
- 25 MW to come online in 2015/16, 105 MW in 2016/2017, 181 MW in 2017/18 and 790 MW in 2018/19
We assume these targets are not including private development. How realistic those numbers are is also not being looked at here.
