Latin America remains one crucial geothermal market for the future

Latin America continues to be a major market for the geothermal energy industry, behind Asia and Africa in rankings on installed capacity and projects under development.

Looking at current development world-wide, there is a lot of talk about geothermal development in Asia and Africa, but one of the key markets for the global geothermal energy industry continues to be Latin America.

With the countries of South and Central America, as well as Mexico to the north, the region represents 12 countries that are currently developing geothermal projects.

On top sits Mexico with currently 1,069 MW of installed geothermal power generation capacity and about 500 MW in development.

There are also several countries that currently don’t have a geothermal power plant, but are developing projects. While we keep Venezuela on this list, we consider development there to be very unlikely in the coming years.
