Logistics center in Dobanovci, Serbia to implement geothermal heating and cooling system

Logistics company Nelt Group will be implementing a hybrid solar and geothermal heat pump system at its distribution facility in Dobanovci, Serbia.

Nelt Group, the leading distribution and logistics company of Serbia, has presented an innovative system for the heating and cooling of its facilities in Dobanovic that combines both geothermal and solar energy. Through this project, greenhouse gas emissions in the Dobanovic facility will be reduced by up to 40% by 2030.

The project was co-financed by the Government of Switzerland with a donation of USD 200,000, with the cooperation of the Ministry of Environmental Protection as part of the “EU for Green Agenda in Serbia” initiative. This is only of more than 90 green investments implemented under this initiative, which is being implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) with funding from the Governments of Switzerland, Sweden, and Serbia.

A geothermal water-to-water heat pump replaces the previously used gas boiler and supplies about 40% of the heating and cooling needs of two warehouse and office halls, as well as the technical block for vehicle servicing. The system uses groundwater as a renewable energy source and enables heating and cooling of more than 22,000 m², while integrating with the existing energy infrastructure and a solar power plant.

“Our long-term commitment is to develop the company responsibly and sustainably, through initiatives that deliver measurable and tangible results. The geothermal system in Dobanovci is a concrete step in the decarbonisation of our logistics infrastructure,” said Marko Cilic, Executive Board President & Acting CEO of Nelt Group.

The UNDP has been deeply involved in geothermal studies in Serbia in the past years, completing geothermal resource studies at the sites of the SIV 3 building in Belgrade and the Palace of Serbia. The country’s first geothermal district heating scheme, located in Bogatic, became operational in 2018.
