LOI signed for drilling rig for Delft geothermal project, Netherlands

A letter of intent has been signed between Geothermie Delft and Huisman for the delivery of a drilling rig, with a target start of drilling by November 2022.

A letter of intent (LOI) has been signed between Geothermie Delft (GTD) and Huisman for the delivery of a drilling rig for the geothermal project on the TU Delft campus. This marks an important milestone for the project which we reported on earlier this year as making the preparations for drilling.

Geothermie Delft is a joint project of TU Delft, Aardyn, Shell, and EBN. The planned geothermal facility in the TU Delft campus will supply both the campus and the neighborhoods with sustainable heat, while also providing a “Living Lab” for geothermal research. One of the main goals of the project is to use the data collected from the well to generate more accurate simulations, thus lowing the overall risk of geothermal projects.

The planned date for the start of drilling for the project is November 2022. Over the next few months, preparations will be made to make sure that the drilling program proceeds as smoothly as possible. Leendert-Jan Ursem from GDT will be closely involved in the drilling team as the Drilling & Completion Manager.

“After a long period of preparation, it is really great that we can now get to work. We have already ordered the so-called long lead items, such as the casings, wellheads and other materials that have a long delivery time. Now let’s get to work assembling the team. Exciting times!” said Ursem.
