Maori trust seeks permission for geothermal plant at Kawerau

A Maori trust in New Zealand is seeking a permission for the construction of a geothermal power plant on its own “block of land” north-east of Kawerau on the North Island of New Zealand.

In an application, a Maori trust in New Zealand is seeking a permission for the construction of a geothermal power plant on its own “block of land”.

The permission is sought for a 35-year consent for the construction of the plant and the use of water. The Kawerau A-8-D Ahu Whenua Trust and two other groups have requested the consent from the Bay of Plenty Regional Council, and two local district councils.

The potential project site lies on land in the north-east of the Kawerau geothermal field in the Bay of Plenty on the North Island of New Zealand.

There seem to be several obstacles ahead for the project, among them cultural and environmental concerns. A hearing is expected to take place later this week.
