Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig hopes to make the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern a model region for the use of geothermal district heating in Germany.
In a press conference, the Prime Minister for the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany, Manuela Schwesig, stated the aim of making the region a model for the use of geothermal energy to heat homes. To this end, a model outline will soon be submitted to the federal government.
This proclamation follows the successful commissioning of a geothermal heating plant in Schwerin a few months ago. This landmark district heating project supplies clean and renewable heat 2000 households, or about 15% of the district heating customers in Schwerin. An investment of EUR 20.5 million went into the project.
Geothermal energy has been used for heat generation for many years in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, particularly in Neubrandenburg, Neustadt-Glewe and Waren (Müritz). Earlier this year, plans were announced for the expansion of the combined geothermal heat and power plant in Neustadt-Glewe. Further projects are in the planning stage.
“Mecklenburg-Vorpommern shows how the heat turnaround can go,” said Federal Construction Minister Klara Geywitz (SPD), who attended the cabinet meeting as a guest. The federal government of Germany wants to push for geothermal energy development, and the data on this is already very good in Eastern Germany.
“I am curious to see what the outline will look like for such a model region,” Geywitz said.
