Mexico expects an additional 750 MW in geothermal power generation capacity by 2029

Mexico’s Ministry of Energy (SENER) expects an additional 750 MW of geothermal power generation capacity to be added by 2029 with new projects and expansion of existing plants.

Over the next decade, SENER, the Ministry of Energy in Mexico expects up top 750 MW in additional geothermal power generation capacity to be added.

As of early July 2018, SENER had issued 24 exploration permits and six production permits for geothermal energy, as reported by BN Americas.

This brings the total permitted capacity to 948.4 MW, while the Ministry quotes a capacity of 920 MW operating today in Mexico.

The planned 750 MW of additional capacity is to come from the following fields:

The key geothermal areas based on exploration permits issued are the State of Jalisco (5), Michoacán, Nayarit and Baja California (all 4), Puebla (3), Guanajuato (2), Baja California Sur and Chaiapas (one each).
