Nevis geothermal project chooses turbine supplier and EPC contractor

NREI International, as developer of the Nevis geothermal project has chosen Turboden as turbine supplier and EPC contractor with an operation target at the end of 2017.

In conjunction with the GEA U.S. and International Showcase taking place at the moment in Washington, D.C. an announcement was made regarding the geothermal project in Nevis, Caribbean.

The Nevis project is developed by Nevis Renewable Energy International (NREI, which is an affiliate of Texas based Thermal Energy Partners LLC (TEP).

In a release today, the company reports “that Turboden has been selected through a competitive bid process, to provide high efficiency ORC turbines and to serve as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor for its 9MW geothermal project in Nevis.

TEP’s selection of Turboden provides a geothermal generator solution that is based on a single axial multi-stage ORC turbine designed by Turboden. Turboden is a group company of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI). As the equipment provider and the lead company providing EPC services, Turboden will provide high efficiency binary cycle generation equipment that maximizes the available energy from the Nevis geothermal reservoir.

According to Paolo Bertuzzi, CEO of Turboden, “This project award is the latest confirmation that the geothermal industry recognizes Turboden’s technology for its outstanding performance and reliability, and Turboden as the company providing thorough customer-oriented response to reservoir developments. Turboden delivers rapid response, economic value, a positive environmental impact and mitigates deployment risk by adopting modular methodology”.

“We are thrilled to be working with Turboden on this most important and transformative project for Nevis.” said Bruce Cutright, CEO of Thermal Energy Partners.

Turboden will also be responsible for the Engineering, Procurement and Construction management for the power plant and will provide all generating equipment. Upon completion of the geothermal plant, 100 percent of Nevis’ electricity will come from renewable sources. According to Cutright, “The plant will be completed and fully functional by the end of 2017, generating electric power from a high enthalpy geothermal resource.”
