Laboratory at Geothermal Center of Excellence inaugurated in Larderello

A new Laboratory was inaugurated as part of the Center of Excellence for Geothermal Energy in Larderello, Tuscany. There are big plans on research and technological development, but also on education, both national and international.

This past Saturday, CEG LAB – Laboratory of the Center of Excellence for Geothermal Energy was inaugurated in Larderello, Italy.

The Laboratory and Center has been initiated by the Consortium for the Development of Geothermal Areas (CoSviG) with the support of the Region of Tuscany. With an attached hotel, it will allow for trials and testing of prototypes and products that allow an improvement of technology in geothermal.

The laboratory – named after the scientist Paolo Mascagni – is aimed primarily at public bodies, companies in the industry and research institutes, working in synergy with universities in order to form a real network. In practice it will operate in different sectors for the study of the resource, geology / hydrogeology in geothermal fields and plant connected, offering a number of services ranging from the measurement and characterization of geothermal resources and fluids up to study materials and testing of innovative engineering solutions.

Moreover CEGLab will support the training and retraining of new generations of technicians. Scientific director of the laboratory is Prof. Alessandro Sbrana of the University of Pisa, who stressed out the significant role of the laboratory for education: “There is a strong interest to establish a graduate school on geothermal energy , so much so that we have already made ??contact to create a Summer School for researchers from developing countries , with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs “. The Mayor of Pomarance, Loris Martignoni , has expressed his satisfaction with the results achieved: “This is our energy, the energy of our territory and here we want to keep the know-how to continue to be a global benchmark. This laboratory – unique in Italy- confirms our being a center of excellence. ”
