New geothermally-heated pool opens in Victoria, Australia

A new geothermally heated swimming pool has been opened in Victoria, Australia featuring a 644 m deep well with groundwater temperatures of 67 degrees Celsius.

As reported by Australian hydrogeological and environmental consulting firm Rockwater, the Gippsland Regional Aquatic Centre (GRAC) in Traralgon in the State of Victoria in Australia is going to open with a 3-day splash party. The official opening took place earlier this week.

The Hon Mary-Anne Thomas MP and Harriet Shing, MP opened the facility and Andrew Lauterstein (three-time Olympic medallist) was among the first to swim in the geothermally-heated water.

This geothermal project is the first of its kind in Victoria and it ushers in new geothermal opportunities for the state. Rockwater designed the geothermal project, supervised drilling, construction and testing of the geothermal bores and provided ongoing project support, including the development of Victoria’s first DWELP Geothermal Scheme Project Plan. Groundwater at 67 degrees Celsius is accessed via a 644 m deep Burong Formation aquifer bore, with 100% injection into the same aquifer via a dedicated injection bore, 450 m away.

We previously reported on the project.
