New transmission lines to supply geothermal power to western Kenya next year

New transmission infrastructure will be built to connect Kenya’s Olkaria geothermal power plants with Western Kenya will help secure clean, renewable and reliable power to the region.

As reported locally, Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (Ketraco) expects to begin supplying electricity generated by geothermal power plants in the country to western Kenya.

Securing the wayleave rights, the 220kv/ 400 kV Olkaria-Lessos-Kisumu line will be completed and provide electricity by next year, according to Ketraco’s land economist Charles Oguoko.

This Sh 18.2 billion ($176 million) project will provide renewable energy to the region, which currently depends on 60 MW Sondu Miriu hydropower plant (only operating in rainy season) and an expensive fossil fuel plant at Muhoroni, so the Standard.

This will provide the region with more reliable and cheaper power, and provide additional markets for the geothermal power plants of the country.
