New Zealand’s second geothermal dairy plant nearing completion
Another dairy plant that will be using geothermal energy for the production of organic milk powder is nearing completion. The plant is a joint venture by Maori groups and a Japanese investor to process around 30 million litres of milk.
Reported locally, another Maori-owned dairy plant that is to utilise geothermal energy for the production of milk powder is nearing completion.
The $33 million plant in Kawerau is a joint venture of 11 Maori entities that hold together 67% of the shares, while Japanese company Imanaka (via Cedenco Dairy) holds 33%.
The plant is expected to produce organic whole milk powder, milk protein concentrates and butter, processing up to 30 million litres of milk in the first year of production. Milk for the plant will come from 12 nearby farms.
This will be an addition to a similar plant at the Mokai geothermal plant, also Maori owned.
