Nicaragua advancing geothermal agenda with 35 MW Casita geothermal project
The Environmental and Social Impact Assessment for the 35 MW Casita geothermal project has been presented by the project partners, the Nicaraguan Electricity Company (ENEL) and Polaris Infrastructure. The project is being developed in a Public-Private Partnership structure.
Nicaragua continues its promotion for investment in geothermal development in the country. With an estimated 2,000 MW potential, the country hopes to attract investment that could help further advance development in the country.
As reported in the region, a recent meeting with community leaders of the Departemento de Chinandega, the Public-Private Partnership Cerro Colorado Power reported that progress is being made in the Casita Geothermal Project – San Cristóbal and that they have already completed the Environmental and Social Impact Study (EISA). The Casita geothermal project is planned as a 35 MW development.
The Cerro Colorado Power Public-Private Partnership is integrated by the Nicaraguan Electricity Company (ENEL) and Polaris Infrastructure Inc. presented the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (EISA) of the Casita Geothermal Project – San Cristóbal, highlighting the different stages of the Project, the mitigation and environmental protection measures as well as social responsibility programs to guarantee the inclusive development of the inhabitants of the municipalities of Chinandega, Chichigalpa and Posoltega.
The concession area of the Project will be 20 km2, spread over three municipalities: Chinandega, Chichigalpa and Posoltega; the future Geothermal Plant will have an installed power generation capacity of 35 MW.
ENEL has informed that the execution of the Project in this region of the country will generate direct and indirect jobs, in addition it will benefit the population, through the shared social responsibility model.
