Nicaragua plans to add 100 MW geothermal capacity in coming years
The Government of Nicaragua is working on a plan to change its current energy mix, aiming at having 80% of its energy from renewable sources by 2018.
The Government of Nicaragua is planning to attract investment worth 4 billion in energy generation from renewable sources in the next 15 years, said the Minister of Energy and Mines, Emilio Rappaccioli.
He said these investments are intended to add 1,354 MW of power on the basis of geothermal, wind, hydro or solar; integrating renewable sources over the period 2014-2028, which os more than double of current consumption.
“We are finalizing a plan to change the energy matrix (thermal to renewable), which I will present to the President (of the country), Daniel Ortega,” Rappaccioli said, told the Channel 4 local television, akin to government.
Rappaccioli said he also hopes to incorporate 300 MW of wind power, 100 MW of geothermal and another 100 MW of solar over the next 15 years.
Nicaragua was ranked by a Climatescope 2013 report as the most attractive country in Central America, and the third in Latin America, to invest in renewable energy, second only to Brazil and Chile.
