ORIX to commence with construction of Minami-Kayabe geothermal power plant in Hokkaido
ORIX Corporation is set to begin construction of a 6.5 MW geothermal power plant in Minami-Kayabe in Hokkaido, Japan.
Japanese firm ORIX Corporation has announced that they are set to begin the construction of a new geothermal power plant in the Minami-Kayabe region in Hakodate City, Hokkaido. The power plant is designed to have a generation capacity of 6.5 MW and will be the largest binary cycle geothermal power plant in Japan. ORIX is targeting completion of the construction and commercial operations by 2022.
ORIX has been very active in geothermal development in Japan. They currently own and operate one of the largest geothermal power plants in Beppu City and have conducted surveys for publicly tendered geothermal sites in locations across Japan. They are also engaged in other forms of renewable energy generation including solar, wind, and biomass.
In 2017, ORIX invested in a strategic partnership with Ormat Technologies Inc., with the hopes of combining the expertise and business foundations of both companies in aid of Japan’s geothermal development.
