Pertamina eyes green hydrogen production at Ulubelu geothermal plant

PT Pertamina (Persero) targets the first production of green hydrogen fuel or green hydrogen in the Ulubelu geothermal working area (WKP) to start in 2023. The production is targeted to reach 100 kilograms per day, as reported by CNBC Indonesia.

PT Pertamina Power Indonesia ‘s Vice President of Business Planning & Portfolio , Fuadi Arif Nasution, explained that a green hydrogen pilot project is being developed in the Ulubelu area with a production target of 100 kilograms per day.

“The estimate is around 100 kg/day, the target is 2023,” said Fuadi in the discussion on Drinking the Clean Energy Transition Business Opportunity, Wednesday (3/8/2022).

According to him, Pertamina is currently taking care of the environmental permit process at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry. Where the company focuses on the revision process of environmental impact analysis (AMDAL) which is one of the requirements.

“The technology used is there. We already have an off taker , namely RU Plaju. But right now we are focusing on revising the Amdal for licensing, so it’s not on stream yet, pray for it to be launched soon,” he said.

Even so, Fuad has not been able to reveal the amount of investment that must be spent by Pertamina for the pilot project. But what is certain is that the investment for green hydrogen is quite large.

“This is more of a pilot project to understand the process. We cannot mention the details of the investment plan because it is our kitchen,” he said.
