PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy still considering strategic partnerships for geothermal development in Indonesia.

As reported last week from Indonesia, PT Pertamina (Persero) President Commissioner Basuki Tjahaja Purnama or Ahok has discussed that his company is still looking for a strategic partner for the development of geothermal energy, considering this is still a new thing for the company.

“We have huge geothermal potential , so we want to find this strategic partner , so that there is an integrated and efficient business process, and of course we also get the best human resources,” he said at an event last week.

At the end of last year, the company through its subsidiary, PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE) collaborated with PT Medco Power Indonesia (MPI) for the development of geothermal power projects in Indonesia.

Ahok said Pertamina continues to open up opportunities for cooperation, mergers, or even acquisitions in terms of developing geothermal energy. According to him, Indonesia’s geothermal potential is very large. He said that currently Pertamina was pursuing an increase in the operation of a Geothermal Power Plant (PLTP) with a capacity of 1,000-2,000 MW.

As for the end of 2021, Pertamina has operated a geothermal power plant with a capacity of 672 MW.

“Pertamina has a dream, we want to be the largest, we will lead in this renewable energy power (generating), we will lead geothermal between 1-2 GW of capacity. So of course we also open opportunities for mergers and so on with other parties. existing parties,” said Ahok. Geothermal is a backup for other renewable energy developments.

The former governor of DKI Jakarta added that basically Indonesia is very rich in renewable energy sources, ranging from solar energy, wind, ocean waves, biomass, water, to geothermal energy. This also makes the government encourage the development of renewable energy, while reducing the use of coal-based or fossil energy-based steam power plants. However, in making the transition from fossil energy to various types of renewable energy, said Ahok, it is still necessary to have energy backup that has a large capacity to replace PLTU, namely geothermal or PLTP. Therefore, the company will continue to encourage the development of geothermal energy.

“Indonesia is one of the countries with the most potential for all types of renewable energy, it has diesel (solar), hydro (water), wind, waves and so on, but that actually needs backup , now the backup is certainly not with PLTU but with geothermal . ” he concluded.
