Plans for geothermal greenhouses at Mount Nemrut, Turkey

Exploration work is being conducted for plans of geothermal greenhouses at Mount Nemrut in Bitlis, Turkey.

The Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry in Bitlis, Turkey continues its efforts to identify hot water resources in efforts of local economic development, as reported locally.

In this context , geophysical engineers, who have been conducting research in Ahlat, Adilcevaz and Tatvan districts on the foothills of Mount Nemrut for two months, determine the underground geothermal resources with the latest technological devices.

Geophysics Engineer Hilal Özdogan told reporters that they are carrying out geothermal resource exploration activities in the region with the project initiated by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.

Explaining that greenhouses will be established by the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry in water resources with sufficient temperature, Özdogan said: “The greenhouses to be established will create a great agricultural potential for our city. In Bitlis, where the winters are long, we will be able to eat vegetables on the branch even during these periods. We conduct geophysical studies at the points we have determined. We map the underground up to 10 thousand meters. Then, at the points we will recommend, the water to be extracted by geothermal drilling will be extracted and according to the temperature. “We work in 4 license areas in Bitlis. The devices we install record measurements for 18 hours. After 18 hours, we install the devices we collect in new location areas. We record images of fault lines, magma chambers and hot water up to 10 thousand meters.”

Explaining that they had done the same work in the Cald?ran district of Van before, Özdogan stated that they wanted to implement the same project in Bitlis.

In 2013, it was announced that an Icelandic group was planning a geothermal power project at Mount Nemrut, we are not aware on the status of these plans.
