Politicians in German state of Bavaria recognise potential offered by geothermal energy

The Praxisforum Geothermie.Bayern 2019, will point out the possibilities offered by deep geothermal energy resources for a climate-neutral society. The event will take place 7-9 October 2019 in Munich, Germany.

Deep geothermal energy can accelerate the urgently required heat turnaround in the building sector. In addition, it enables base load-capable electricity generation from renewable sources: climate-friendly and local. In Bavaria, a geothermal heat and power supply is already realised in many communities, and a new geothermal hotspot is developping in the Eastern Molasse Basin. This increasingly reaches up to higher political levels as well.

Bavarian Minister of State for Economics, Regional Development and Energy, Hubert Aiwanger, will present on October 8th in the course of the Praxisforum Geothermie.Bayern with a speech titled “Geothermal energy as an important component for a climate-friendly power supply”. Obviously Bavarian politics recognizes the signs of time.

23 geothermal projects in Bavaria already show, how a combined supply with heat and electricity from the heat of the earth can look like. Minister Aiwanger will award the two best geothermal projects with the Geothermischer Energiepreis Bayern in the two categories Electricity and Heat in the afternoon of the congress day.

After the first successful projects, the geothermal plants Traunreut (2014) and Kirchweidach (2013), went into operation in the district of Traunstein, a new geothermal hotspot is currently evolving northeast of Lake Chiemsee. Eight projects are currently being planned. Forum IV in the afternoon of the congress day presents a new municipal project in the district of Altötting, where the preliminary investigations indicate a particularly rich geothermal potential. Further lectures will deal with the geothermal project in Traunreut, the latest drillings and power plant plans in Garching an der Alz as well as project development in Tittmoning, Trostberg and Palling.

The official registration deadline for the Praxisforum Geothermie.Bayern is 1 October.
