With an estimated development potential of up to 190 MW, the developer PT GeoDipa Energi continues work on the Arjuno Welirang geothermal project in East Java, Indonesia.

Work continues at the Arjuno-Welirang geothermal working areas (WKP) in East Java, Indonesia with preparations for exploration ongoing.

The developer of the project, state-owned PT Go Dipa Energi (GDE) conducted a magnetotelluric (MT) and electromagnetic time domain (TDEM) survey last year.

As reported locally, the MT survey was conducted at 78 points of Arjuno-Welirang geothermal working area (mining working area). While the TDEM survey had 380 reference points.

The survey is to complement previous similar activities. Among others, geological and geochemical surveys in 2009, geophysics and geoelectrics in 2010. Gravity, magnetic and magnetotelluric surveys from 2010 to 2012.

From some of these studies, GDE felt the need to conduct a follow-up survey to get a more detailed picture related to the Arjuno-Welirang geothermal area.

“Based on the results of these studies, especially in the study of magnetotelluric geophysics and gravity, further geophysical studies need to be carried out to provide a more detailed picture of Arjuno Welirang’s prospects,” Geodipa wrote as a 2018 procurement document.

The survey results, will be the basis for further exploration or development scheduled to begin this year.

So far, the results of GDE research show that the geothermal equivalent potential in Arjuno-Welirang WKP reaches 190 MW.

“The development of the WKP is still waiting for the certainty of the purchase price of electricity in accordance with the economics of the project from the government,” explained GDE President Director, Riki Firmanda Ibrahim.
