Preparations begin for geothermal heating project at Gräfelfing, Germany

After completion of exploratory drilling, preparations are now underway for drilling and construction of the Gräfelfing geothermal heating project in Bavaria, Germany.

Preparatory work has begun for the planned geothermal heating project in the municipality of Gräfelfing in the Munich district of Bavaria, Germany. With the drilling of an exploratory borehole completed, the drilling site is now being set up in preparation for planned drilling operations by the 3rd quarter of 2024.

We first reported on the Gräfelfing geothermal heating project receiving the green light from the municipality of Gräfelfing in mid-2022. The municipality had then selected Silenos Energy GmbH & Co. KG, a subsidiary of the Strabag Group, as the general contractor to do the drilling work and the implementation and operation of the district heating network.

During the first exploratory drilling, soil samples were collected to help determine the exact depth of groundwater and other geophysical properties of the site. This information is vital to protecting the groundwater resource close to the surface during the actual drilling work. Exploratory drilling was done on November 2022 by Baugrund Süd GmbH.

The drilling site for the geothermal project will be at the paddock area of the riding club between Würmtalstraße and Neurieder Weg. Preparation of the drilling site is planned to start by the end of 2023 or the beginning of 2024. Drilling is targeted by the 3rd quarter of 2024. This will be simultaneously done with the laying of the district heating network and the construction of the heating center.

Roadway rehabilitation is also being planned for this year on the eastern Bahnhofstraße and in Straße Am Kirchenholzl where the district heating pipes will be laid down. Property owners on these areas are encouraged to express their intent to sign up to the geothermal district heating network. All other owners can be put on a reservation list. The municipality says that these declarations of intent are vital in determining the profitability of the project.

For the first phase of the project, a main line will go from the drilling site through Würmtalstraße, Bahnhofstraße, Rottenbucher Straße, Lochhamer Straße, Würmstraße and Am Anger as well as Pasinger Straße before it loops back. After a heat requirement analysis, further expansion stages will be communicated through the website of the Geothermie-Gesellschaft Gräfelfing.
