Preparations underway for geothermal drilling in Grodziec, Poland
With two offers received after a tender, drilling for a planned geothermal heating project in Grodziec, Poland is expected to commence soon.
The commune of Jasienica in Grodziec, Poland has received two offers after announcing a tender for the drilling of Jasienica GT-1, a planned exploration and appraisal borehole for geothermal heat production. It is planned for this work to be completed by 2024.
The local government of Grodziec received nearly PLN 15 million (approx. USD 3.4 million) from the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management for the development of geothermal energy. This was a part of the “Enabling access to thermal waters in Poland” program that has been implemented since 2020. Grodziec is only one of several municipalities to receive funding along with Gniezno and about a dozen others.
Previous studies have indicated that there may be a deposit of geothermal waters in Jasienica with temperatures of 70 to 90 degrees Celsius. To tap this resource, an exploration and appraisal borehole is planned to be drilled to a depth of nearly 2 kilometers.
Along with the actual drilling work, the chosen service provider will need to develop and provide hydrogeological documentation. Through a series of tests, data from the borehole will be used to evaluate the resource and allow the commune to apply for a concessions for its exploitation.
Janusz Pierzyna, the mayor of Jasienica, has also indicated that geothermal energy is expected to play a crucial role in the planned tourist, recreational, and rehabilitation complex in Grodziec as part of the Jasienicki Kurort Zamkowy project.
