PT Geo Dipa Energi sets ambitious 1,020 MW by 2035 development target in Indonesia

State-owned PT Geo Dipa Energi has set itself an ambitious 1,020 MW by 2035 development targets with expansions of around 400 MW each at Dieng and Patuha and additional projects.

The Indonesian government remains committed to increase renewable energy fuelled power generation by 23% until 2025, so an article by Ruang Energi. The government is calling all parties, stakeholders, both public and private business entities to cooperate in achieving this target.

One of the companies is state-owned PT Geo Dipa Energi (Persero), which has a target of reaching 1,020 MW of installed geothermal power generation capacity by 2035. Today, the company operates two geothermal power plant, the Dieng 1 and Patuha geothermal plants with a capacity of each 55 MW. This was announced as part of a webinar on the “open procurement policy for the Development Project of Dieng 2 Patuha 2 with ADB funding at PT Geo Dipa Energi (Persero) as a State-Owned Enterprise (SOE) under the Ministry of Finance” held on October 5, 2020.

Currently, Geo Dipa is completing the construction of its additional 10 MW Dieng-1 Small Scale geothermal plant (PLTP), which will operate in 2021.

Then, the Additional Patuha-1 Binary PLTP of 10 MW, which will operate in 2022. Furthermore, developing PLTP Dieng-2 and Patuha-2 each with a capacity of 55 MW, and can operate in 2023.

Then, in 2025,  Geo Dipa plans to redevelop PLTP Dieng-3 and Patuha-3 with a capacity of 55 MW each, and is targeted to operate in 2025. So that in that year (2025) its capacity is 370 MW.

In addition, in a period of 10 years (2025-2035), Geo Dipa plans to expand its capacity to 780 MW, which is obtained from the Candradimuka PLTP of 20 MW which is targeted to operate in 2025.

Then, PLTP Dieng-4 to Dieng-8 is 270 MW in 2030. Then, PLTP Patuha-4 to Patuha-8 is 290 MW and can operate in 2032.

Furthermore, PLTP Umbul Telomoyo to Arjuno Welirang with a capacity of up to 200 MW and can operate in 2035.

However, it is impossible for Geo Dipa to build the PLTP by itself with their own funding. This is because the Company’s finances for 13 years (2002 to 2015 have always suffered losses. It was only in 2016-2019 that it showed positive figures.

“Therefore, to accelerate the 23% target by 2025, GeoDipa really needs equity from the Government,” said President Director of PT Geo Dipa Energi (Persero), Riki F. Ibrahim, to Ruangenergi.com this week.

Currently, Geo Dipa is not in a position to push construction with its own funding.  “The company’s target in 2035 must reach 1,000 MW, and this will also cooperate with manufacturing companies or companies whose rating is AAA, a message from the Government. And it is not allowed to cooperate with companies that are only funding intermediaries, ”he said.
