Renewable energy lifts East Nusa Tenggara electrification rate to 73%
From 62% last year, various efforts to advance the development of renewable energy sources in East Nusa Tenggara has raised the electrification rate of the region to 73%
With the support of renewable energy sources, the electrification ratio of the East Nusa Tenggara Province (NTT) has jumped to 73.72% from last year’s 62%. As more investment is put into the development of renewable energy in the region, efforts are also underway to improve the employment, literacy, and education of the local communities.
“At present, more than Rp9 billion of investment has been committed to six renewable development projects including geothermal power plants, micro hydro power plants, solar power, and wind power,” according to Muhamad Ali, Director of Human Capital Management of PT PLN (Persero).
Ignatius Rendoyoko, General Manager of PLN East Nusa Tenggara Regional Main Unit, also expressed optimism that the electrification ratio of NTT will soon move close to 100% “This region has a very high potential for renewable energy. These projects typically make use of land that is no longer productive, so there is a lot of economic value to be gained.”
PLN has also undertaken several corporate social responsibility programs geared towards the education and training of the local communities. These include the development of certification skills of the National Professional Certification Agency (BNSP) and collaborative research programs with the University of Nusa Cendana.
“It is hoped that through various collaborative programs such as providing scholarships and vocational systems, the people of this region will be able to have different experiences in education, both domestically and internationally,” added Josef A Nae Soi, Deputy Governor of NTT.
