Repsol provides updates on Gran Canaria geothermal exploration
Repsol has been granted an extension for the geothermal exploration project in Gran Canaria and will now focus efforts on a smaller study area with higher potential.
Repsol has recently been granted a one-year extension for the exploration permit for the “Lisa” geothermal project in Gran Canaria, part of the Canary Islands archipelago. At the moment, the studies indicate the existence of a medium-high enthalpy geothermal resource on the island. We had previously reported on the start of this exploration project back in 2021.
The Spanish oil company now plans to limit the extent of the exploration permit to a study area where the presence of a high-enthalpy geothermal resource is most likely. During this extended period, Repsol plans to continue the general geological, geochemical, and environmental works in the area while also conducting new geophysical studies to better understand the subsurface characteristics.
As in the first year, Repsol will be collaborating with the Geovol group of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria for the extension period. Repsol has also commissioned the Instituto Tecnológico de Canarias (ITC) to conduct a thermal demand study of Gran Canaria to evaluate the feasibility of geothermal direct use applications.
“If the results of the research phase are successful, additional surveys would continue to delimit and develop the geothermal resource, which would culminate in the construction of a geothermal plant in the years 2027-2028 ,” said a representative from Repsol.
