Resources promising for potential geothermal heating in Katwijk, Netherlands

A consortium of Shell, Firan/ Alliander and D4 is planning a geothermal heating project in Katwijk, Noordwijk in the Netherlands, after early studies indicated promising resources.

Earlier this month, local news from Katwijk, Netherlands report that the underground below Katwijk and Noordwijk seems warm enough to heat houses, among other things, in the future. This is evident from desk research, commissioned by both municipalities. Previous general studies also pointed to the potential for geothermal energy as a future heat source.

The results of the new research confirm the positive expectation and point to ‘promising opportunities for geothermal energy’, the Mayor and Aldermen said in a letter to the city council.

The soil layer that is used for geothermal projects in Westland, among other places, is also present here and also appears to be recoverable. The temperature in the low here is indeed lower than in the Westland, but it is expected to be high enough to heat houses, among other things.

The study also showed that there is potential for geothermal energy in the surrounding municipalities.

Start in Noordwijk

The municipalities of Katwijk, Noordwijk, Teylingen, Lisse and Hillegom were informed in April of this year about the initiative for the development of an open and public heating network, and further research into the potential of geothermal energy in this region. This initiative is taken by Shell, Firan (subsidiary network company Alliander) and D4, project developer in the energy transition.

The initiative is based on a start on the east side of Noordwijk, near the Leeweg. This geothermal source could be connected from here to the heat demand in Noordwijk, Katwijk aan Zee and Voorhout. In addition, Greenport Aalsmeer is investigating whether local residual heat from greenhouse horticulture can be linked to heat demand in the greenhouse horticulture sector and the built environment. Via this infrastructure, heat can be supplied to Greenport Aalsmeer later than geothermal energy.

The ultimate ambition is to scale up to a ‘Warmterotonde Rijnland’ by linking local heat networks.
