RFP – Feasibility study for green hydrogen and fertilizer in Olkaria, Kenya

KenGen has issued a Request for Proposals for the feasibility study for the manufacture of green hydrogen, ammonia, and fertilizer in the Olkaria geothermal site in Kenya.

KenGen has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for a feasibility study on the manufacture of green hydrogen, ammonia, and fertilizer and its’ pilot plant at Olkaria, Naivasha, Kenya. Interested participants will need to take note of a few important dates.

Bidders will need to attend a Mandatory Pre-Bid Conference via Zoom on August 18, 2022 starting at 10 AM EAT. Pre-registration for this meeting can be done via this link. Following the meeting, there shall also be a Mandatory site visit on September 15, 2022 at 10 AM EAT at Geothermal Plaza – Olkaria.

According to KenGen, the results of the feasibility study will be used to determine the size of the proposed manufacturing plant and its timeline of construction. KenGen holds a strategic advantage in executing this plan since they will be relying on the power that they produce in the Olkaria facility. The geothermal brine from power production can also be a source of high-value products such as borate fertilizers.

This initiative by KenGen comes at a time when fertilizer prices have gone through a 71% increase in prices from the previous year. This surge in fertilizer prices is a global phenomenon that started during the COVID-19 pandemic and was compounded by the current situation in Ukraine.

This is also an opportunity for KenGen to further diversify their revenues. This is something that many geothermal developers around the world are doing, mostly through direct use applications of residual geothermal heat or development of tourism sites. KenGen has also started providing geothermal drilling services to the Tulu Moye and Aluto-Langano projects in Ethiopia.
