Sinopec launches expanded geothermal heating in China for winter

Sinopec has launched an expanded geothermal heating service in China covering nearly 85 million square meters of residential areas.

The geothermal heating service of oil giant China Petrochemical Corporation (Sinopec) has fully launched this winter. With more than 700 heating stations, the heating service covers nearly 85 million square meters.

This provides emissions-free heating services for millions of households in more than 60 cities and counties in Tianjin, Shaanxi, Hebei, Henan, Shandong, Shanxi, Hubei and other places. Geothermal heating is expected to reduce about 4.2 million tons of CO2 emissions annually.

Sinopec has made full preparations before the heating season to ensure on-time,  high-quality, and efficient heating. A total of nearly 400 geothermal stations were expanded and upgraded with information platforms, effectively improving resource utilization and heating efficiency. The company has also established customer service centers in Hebei, Henan, Shandong, Shaanxi, Shanxi, and other places.  This has helped with community integration and provides a customer service hotline to answer questions.

We had previously reported on Sinopec’s plans to triple its geothermal heating capacity to 120 to 150 million square meters by 2023. In 2019, the geothermal heating plants of Sinopec covered only around 50 million square meters of residential areas.

Sinopec Green Energy Geothermal Development Co., Ltd. (SGE), the geothermal heating arm of Sinopec, is a Sino-Foreign Joint Venture with Icelandic partner Arctic Green Energy.
