Study for large-scale geothermal heating to be undertaken in Whitby, Canada

The town of Whitby in Ontario, Canada is earmarking a $44,250 investment through the Green Municipal Fund to conduct a feasibility study for a large-scale geothermal district heating project. This was announced by Parliament Member for Whitby Ryan Turnbull.

Also joining the Government of Canada in this effort is the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM). The announcement was made in behalf of Minister of Natural Resources Hon. Jonathan Wilkinson and FCM President Taneen Rudyk.

The feasibility study will assess the economic and environmental impacts of putting up a geothermal district heating system in the town of Whitby, as well as the challenges expected of such an endeavor. Learnings from this study will also help in developing other large-scale sustainability projects in the future.

“Geothermal heating provides clean energy to Canadians while reducing emissions. Our government is pleased to be supporting this innovative study to pursue a large-scale geothermal district heating project in Whitby. This investment supports Ontarians and Canadians in fighting climate change while reducing costs.” said Wilkinson.

The Green Municipal Fund is intended to help local governments transition to more sustainable practices. It is funded by the Government of Canada and administered by FCM. It offers a unique mix of funding, resources, and training to equip municipalities with the necessary tools to attain sustainability and low-emission goals.
