The social impact of the Menengai geothermal project highlighted in Kenya

During a recent visit to the site of the geothermal projects at Menengai, Kenya, representatives of the African Development Bank and GDC highlighted the important social role of the projects for the local population.

The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) has expressed satisfaction with the progress made at the Menengai Geothermal Project, so a recent blog post by Geothermal Development Corp. (GDC).

Speaking during a media tour of the project on Tuesday, May 21, 2019, the bank’s Chief Regional Power Systems Officer Mr. Alemayehu Wubeshet, said that the project is fast achieving its output and development outcome adding that it will uplift lives of many residents in the area.

“Upon its completion, Menengai Geothermal Project will be a key pillar in achieving the access to Universal Healthcare and a contributor to economic growth to thousands of residents,” said the official who is also tasked with overseeing the bank’s regional power, energy, climate and green growth operations within the region.

He also added that AfDB has already financed Quantum Power-Menengai Geothermal Project for the construction of a 35 MW Project which is part of the three 35MW plants awarded on Build – Own -Operate Concessions by the Government.

He was accompanied by Dr. Humphrey Ndwiga, AfDB’s Regional Power Operations Manager, General Manager for Resource Development Mr. Cornel Ofwona, a host of international journalists and a section of GDC staff.
