Toyota tapping hydrogen produced with geothermal energy

Toyota partners with construction firm Obayashi to tap geothermal energy produced hydrogen for hydrogen race car and production equipment in Japan.

As part of an announcement by Toyota Motor Corporation on entering a vehicle equipped with a developmental hydrogen-powered engine at the five-hour-long Super Taikyu Race in Autopolis, that took place this past weekend, the company also reports plans on using geothermal energy to produce hydrogen. The hydrogen engine is being developed as part of Toyota’s efforts to realize a carbon-neutral mobility society.

Together with major construction company Obayashi, the company plans to implement hydrogen produced with geothermal energy locally in Kyushu, Japan.

In Kokonoe Town, Oita Prefecture, Obayashi is engaged in a demonstration project for the integrated production of green hydrogen using geothermal power for the first time in Japan, and the supply of this green hydrogen to various customers. It is also supplying green hydrogen produced using geothermal power for Toyota’s hydrogen engine Corolla.

The construction for the demonstration plant started in August 2020. The hydrogen supply capacity is about 10Nm3/h. Obayashi Corporation built the hydrogen plant in Kokonoe town in Oita Prefecture in Kyushu using geothermal energy to decompose water to produce hydrogen. The hydrogen will be supplied to the factory of Toyota in Fukuoka prefecture in Kyushu to be used with fuel cells in forklifts.

The company is utilizing the hydrogen as fuel for a vehicle equipped with a hydrogen engine at the Autopolis race held in Oita this past weekend.
