Universities in Aberdeen, UK partner for collaboration opportunities in geothermal

The University of Aberdeen and Robert Gordon University will be exploring joint opportunities for geothermal research, services, and skills development.

The University of Aberdeen and Robert Gordon University (RGU) have signed a Memorandum of Agreement to evaluate opportunities for joint activity across a wide range of areas linked to geothermal energy. The partnership aims to exploration collaboration across key areas including modeling, drilling, finance, public engagement, supply chain development, subsurface characterization, and training.

Researchers plan to soon work together to design and develop joint initiatives aimed at strengthening research and training capabilities to support the growing geothermal sector in the UK. Options being considered include co-developed research projects, technical services, and new skills programme. Another key focus is securing funding to execute these collaborative ideas.

“Geothermal has enormous potential to play a key role in the transition to low-carbon heating. Through this partnership, we can combine research, innovation and skills development to help unlock that potential and deliver real benefits for communities,” said Professor Clare Bond of the University of Aberdeen and Co-Lead of the Aberdeen Geothermal Feasibility Pilot.

Moreover, the partnership will encourage the sharing of expertise, datasets, facilities, and equipment to allow both institutions to benefit from combined knowledge and resources.

“Strategic partnerships like this play a critical role in unlocking the potential of geothermal energy,” added Chris Moule, Director of Research, Innovation & Enterprise from Robert Gordon University. “By combining knowledge, resources and ambition, we are accelerating local activity and contributing to national net zero goals.”

In 2025, the University of Aberdeen was awarded a £1 million grant for the Aberdeen Geothermal Feasibility Pilot (AGFP), which aims to explore the geothermal potential of Aberdeen and provide pathways for low-carbon heating solutions. The project has since progressed with a passive seismic survey across the city of Aberdeen.
