US BLM Nevada preparing October geothermal lease sale

The Bureau of Land Management Nevada has issued a call for public review and comments on the environmental assessments and unsigned finding of no significant impacts for an upcoming geothermal lease sale. Comments will be accepted from July 7 to August 6.

The lease sale will include 32 parcels of land totaling more than 83,00 acres across Battle Mountain, Carson City, Elko, Ely, and Winnemucca Districts. The sale will take place on October 5, 2021.

The review and comment period will allow for thoughtful consideration of the potential resource impacts in the parcels nominated for leasing. Another site-specific environmental review will be done when Geothermal Drilling Permits are applied for in any of these parcels.

Recently, a final Environmental Assessment was published for the Baltazor Geothermal Project near the Baltazor Hot Springs prior to the construction of two geothermal power plants, as we reported.

The goal of the geothermal lease sale is to help expand the development of renewable energy sources on public land. This supports the goal of President Biden to create a power sector that is free from carbon pollution by 2035. The BLM also strives to ensure that this energy portfolio serves the public interest and benefits current and future generations.
