US DOE launches Geothermal Centre of Excellence

The US Department of Energy has launched the Geothermal Centre of Excellence, which serves to connect industry players and national laboratories.
The US Department of Energy (DOE) Hydrocarbons and Geothermal Energy Office (HGEO) has officially launched the Geothermal Centre of Excellence (CoE), which aims to unite the expertise and capabilities of the DOE’s National Laboratories to accelerate the discovery and development of geothermal energy. The consortium will be led by the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) with support from the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL).
Located on the NLR campus in Golden, Colorado, the Geothermal CoE will serve as the geothermal industry’s entry point to the DOE’s national laboratories. By connecting industry stakeholders with laboratory capabilities and facilities, the CoE aims to help address priority technical barriers and cost effectively scale and accelerate widespread geothermal deployment.
In addition to NLR and NETL, national laboratory partners at the center include:
- Argonne National Laboratory
- Brookhaven National Laboratory
- Idaho National Laboratory
- Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
- Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
- Los Alamos National Laboratory
- Oak Ridge National Laboratory
- Pacific Northwest National Laboratory
- Sandia National Laboratories
The NLR will serve as the primary coordinating hub to draw upon specialized expertise from across the laboratory complex and external collaborators, with NETL serving as a cross-center of excellence integrator. Partner national laboratories will execute specific research tasks agreed upon by the center and contribute specialized capabilities based on institutional strengths.
“America has vast geothermal resources beneath our feet that can provide reliable, around-the-clock energy while strengthening our energy dominance,” said DOE Under Secretary for Energy Kyle Haustveit at a speech during the launch event.
“Under President Trump’s leadership, the Geothermal Center of Excellence will leverage the world-class scientific and engineering expertise of our national laboratories in partnership with industry to unlock gigawatt-scale power generation, expand American energy production, and deliver more affordable, reliable, and secure energy to the American people.”
