UK geothermal development company EGS Energy signs an MOU with Imerys Minerals Limited to collaborate in identifying sites that are viable for developing geothermal power plants using EGS technologies in Cornwall and Devon, UK.

In a release today, UK firms Imerys Minerals Limited (Imerys) and EGS Energy Limited announce that they have signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate in identifying sites that are viable for developing power plants using engineered geothermal systems in Cornwall and Devon.

EGS Energy has undertaken a preliminary geological screening of Imerys sites as a basis for a process to identify the more promising candidate sites, whether for heat or for heat and electricity production. Imerys and EGS Energy will be working together to select those sites where there is a viable business model for establishing EGS plants.

Ashley Shopland, Imerys Business Development and Services Director, said: “Imerys has an on-going programme of reviewing how it can best use its extensive landholdings for the benefit of the local community, economy and environment as well as for sustaining its core minerals business. This programme includes evaluating the potential for sustainable energy sources, and we are therefore pleased to be working with EGS Energy on this exciting initiative.”

Guy Macpherson-Grant, Managing Director of EGS Energy, added: “EGS Energy is looking forward to working with a company such as Imerys, and we are confident that there will be the opportunity to take forward a number of EGS Plants on Imerys land in the medium term. The granite in Cornwall is the most attractive part of the UK for us to be focusing our efforts, and Imerys has unrivalled access to – and knowledge of – large areas of that granite that are of interest geologically for us.”
