The upcoming GeoTHERM 2025 in Offenburg, Germany will have a citizens' event where members of the public can engage with geothermal experts and researchers.

The upcoming GeoTHERM expo & congress taking place in Offenburg, Germany on 20-21 February 2025 will hold a special citizens’ event where interested members of the public will be able to engage with geothermal researchers and experts on topics such as the diverse areas of application of geothermal energy, the technical implementation of near-surface and deep geothermal energy, or the potential of geothermal in today’s energy mix.

The citizens’ event will be held on 21 February at 11:30 AM. Participation in the citizens’ event is free of charge. After the event, a free guided tour of the trade fair will be offered. Interested participants however will need to register by sending an email to geotherm@messe-offenburg.de.

Experts from the State Research Center for Geothermal Energy (LfZG) will be at the event to engage with interested citizens. The LfZG has been coordinating geothermal research in Baden-Württemberg since 2009. As an independent institution of the state, it brings together scientific players to advance research, teaching and technology development. In addition to promoting innovation, the LfZG attaches great importance to informing the public and providing scientifically sound advice to citizens, authorities, politics and business.

Europe’s largest geothermal trade fair

This year’s GeoTHERM is shaping up to live up to last year’s success, when the event recorded an impressive total of 6,509 visitors. The event will be opened on February 20th with a welcome address by Hans-Peter Kopp, Mayor for Finance, Culture and Social Affairs of the City of Offenburg.

A special highlight of the opening event will be the keynote speech by State Secretary Dr. Andre Baumann, Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Energy Economy of Baden-Württemberg, who will set the tone with his speech at the beginning of the congress

Current topics and issues relating to near-surface and deep geothermal energy will be discussed in around 50 specialist lectures. In addition, side events taking place in parallel offer trade visitors the opportunity to exchange ideas intensively about current activities, findings and projects.

The SpeicherCity project will hold an “Aquifer Storage for Germany” workshop on the day before GeoTHERM.  On the first day of GeoTHERM, there is the opportunity to take part in the Geothermal Energy Practice Forum of the Federal Association of Heat Pumps or in the BDG – Workshop on career entry for students in geosciences.

On Friday, students in the Career Connect program have the opportunity to get to know potential employers during guided tours, make contacts and attend exciting lectures on various areas of the geothermal industry as part of the congress.

Advance registration is required for all side events.

The exhibition area will also have a special Start Up Area, which provides a platform for young and innovative companies to be highlighted. Exhibition spaces at GeoTHERM 2025 had been fully booked as early as September 2024, showing the level of interest in the event by industry players, service providers, and organizations.
