The East Africa Geothermal Risk Mitigation Facility has announced the 14 projects that pre-qualified for the $65 million funding round.

The Geothermal Risk Mitigation Facility already in October announced the 14 projects that were pre-qualified in the next funding round for financial support.

The now announced pre-qualified developers, submitted their full applications (RfA) for the 3rd application round (AR) for GRMF financial support before the submission deadline of 20th July 2015.

The 3rd AR started on 31st October 2014 after the pre-qualification workshop held as side-event to the ARGeo-C5 conference in Arusha, Tanzania. On 8th January 2015 – the submission deadline of the pre-qualification phase, sixteen (16) Expressions of Interest (EoI) (10 surface studies and 6 drilling programmes) were formally accepted.

On 20th July 2015, of the 18 project represented in the pre-bidding workshop, 14 RfA were submitted for GRMF financial support. These 14 RfA were submitted by ten (10) entities (6 public and 4 private) from seven – out of the eleven GRMF countries (Comoros, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda).

The following companies have pre-qualified:

  • Kenya: Akiira Geothermal Ltd, Olsuswa Energy, GDC
  • Ethiopia: Cluff Geothermal
  • Djibouti: Djibouti Office for Development of Geothermal Energy
  • Uganda, Pawakom International, Department of Geological Survey and Mines
  • Tanzania: Tanzania Geothermal Development Company
  • Rwanda: Energy Development Corp.
  • Comoros: Bureau Geologique des Comores

The cumulative GRMF financial support requested by all the submitted RfA of the 3rdAR amounts to approximately USD 65 million.
