Indonesia and Germany to cooperate on geothermal development
Germany earmarks $370 million for development aid to Indonesia's geothermal development program with German businesses interested in providing services and products to the country.
Following news of an increased international interest in geothermal development in Indonesia, Germany’s chancellor Angela Merkel recently visited the country.
Germany is convinced that it can help the country to develop its geothermal potential with the help of Germany know-how.
So while there are tremendous opportunities for steam field development, there are several fields with lower temperatures that haven´t been considered to be economically viable.
Germany is among the biggest supporters to Indonesia together with Japan, Australia and the U.S.
A New Zealand industry group recently visited the country as well with a government minister and will be active in geothermal development in the country. Japanese players are looking at EPC contracts and providing turbines. Australian players are holding concession and projects, among them Origin Energy and Panax Geothermal. U.S. players are also actively pursuing the market with service companies.
The German government has planned development aid of up to EUR 300 million ($370 million).
So while Germany is not a volcanic country, its geothermal expertise from lower heat geothermal projects is extensive. So German know-how could help develop lower heat resources as well as the more traditional steam field development projects.
German companies see business opportunities for building plants, with supply of electronics and other technical equipment.
