As one of the leading geothermal operators worldwide, NZ-based power company Mercury is seeking to fill the position of geochemist at its operations in Rotorua, New Zealand.

New Zealand-based power company Mercury has published an exciting job opportunity for a geothermal Geochemist to work with one of the leading global geothermal operator’s in the Rotorua office of Mercury in New Zealand.  As a Geochemist you will plan and execute the Geochemical monitoring program and interpret geochemical data to assess reservoir processes, linking this understanding in a collaborative environment with other technical disciplines.

At Mercury, 100% of generation comes from renewable sources.  With the addition of wind generation planned for late 2020, Mercury will become one of a few companies worldwide, and the only one in New Zealand, with the “awesome foursome” of renewable energy – wind, geothermal, hydro and solar.

Key responsibilities of this role are:

  • Report on field monitoring, resource assessment, and management
  • Identify key reservoir processes
  • Plan and undertake geochemical surveys
  • Undertake geochemical modelling
  • Monitor and report on consent compliance as required
  • Provide technical support to R&D projects with significant financial impact
  • Foster a dynamic team culture which is based on Mercury’s organisation values

The successful candidate will be passionate about working in geothermal energy.  You will be a high performer, who is self-motivated, curious and a quick learner, who can successfully operate within a team environment.  A tertiary qualification is required in earth sciences, chemistry or equivalent.  Both geochemistry experience and post graduate qualifications would be advantageous.  Some travel to geothermal fields will be required, as such a valid driver’s licence is a requirement for this role.

On-the-job training in geothermal geochemistry will be provided to the successful candidate, and therefore applications are open to those in similar industries or from graduate level candidates. Therefore if you are a geologist, hydrologist, chemical engineer, process chemist, industrial chemist or similar then this challenge could be just for you.
