KenGen has been granted funding from the EU for the planned refurbishment and uprating of the Olkaria I and IV geothermal power plants in Naivasha, Kenya.

Government-owned power generation company KenGen has received KES 6 billion (approx. USD 46.6 million) in funding from the European Union (EU) for the planned refurbishment of the Olkaria I and IV geothermal power plants in Naivasha, Kenya. This was announced by the Davis Chirchir, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum.

We had first reported on the planned refurbishing of Olkaria I and IV as part of the plans for KenGen to increase the capacity of their existing geothermal facilities. The plans involve a turbine uprating that will increase the capacity of the two geothermal power stations from the current 280 MW to 320 MW.

This funding will help in attaining the Kenyan government’s objective of increasing the utilization of renewable energy in the country. It also comes at a particularly crucial time when drought has negatively impacted the hydropower generation.
