Kyushu Electric Power, thru subsidiary Kyuden Mirai, will be holding Japan's first wholesale auction for electricity generated from geothermal power plants.

Kyuden Mirai Energy, a subsidiary of Kyushu Electric Power, will be offering up to 600 million kWh of electricity generated from geothermal power plants in what will be Japan’s first wholesale geothermal power auction.

The auction will take place on 15-16 October 2024, and will be done through the portal of EneChain. Interested retail electricity suppliers are encouraged to review the outline and requirements of the auction at the official auction page. The supply period for the auction will be from the 1st of April 2025 to the 31st of March 2026.

Geothermal power will be sold from Kyuden’s four geothermal power plants in Oita and Kagoshima:

  • Hatchobaru Power Station (110 MW)
  • Takigami Power Station (27.5 MW)
  • Yamakawa Power Station (30 MW)
  • Ogiri Power Station (30 MW)

Kyuden is emphasizing the benefits of stable electricity from the geothermal power plants, as well as its being completely renewable and with zero CO2 emissions.

With currently about 214 MW of installed geothermal power generation capacity, Kyushu continues with efforts to explore for new geothermal resources. Earlier this year, the company announced the start of construction of a new 5-MW geothermal power plant north-east of Mount Eboshi in Kirishima City, Kagoshima Prefecture.
