North African Algeria sets hopes in geothermal heating for greenhouses

Francisco Rojas 16 Mar 2015

The country has a 15MW heat project in sights and aims to develop 22,000 MW of renewable energy between now and 2030.

The Algerian Minister of Water Resources, Hocine Necib, has recently discussed a pilot project for greenhouse warming through the use geothermal water according to local news. This technology would allow the production of vegetables in all seasons in the North African country.

It seems that the country has a slight interest in developing geothermal energy, since it accounts for only 15 megawatts in the 22 000 megawatts planned for the period 2015-2030 in the renewable energy development program which has just been revised which should result in up to 27% of national electricity production from renewable sources.

Countries like Iceland make good use of geothermal to grow produce even near the arctic circle, this could be a very interesting development on an otherwise untapped region. The same news source states that Algeria contains significant geothermal reservoirs mainly in the north-east and north-west on the country.
