Registration is now open for three further webinars as part of the East Africa Geothermal Facility Webinar Series. This is a series of webinars organized by the New Zealand – Africa Geothermal Facility.

The webinars are generally 1.5 hours in length and include a pre-recorded video presentation, possibly with links to additional reading.  Participants’ questions will be addressed in a later live Zoom Q&A session. The course presenters are internationally recognized experts in their field from New Zealand and they will be available during the live Q&A sessions.

Title:  Sources of Funding – grants, equity, debt

Speaker:  Alastair Brookes

Q & A schedule: 31 May 2022, 10 AM East Africa Time

Geothermal projects require a significant amount of capital investment to explore and develop a prospect.   A Feasibility Study is a report that summarises and presents the information needed by stakeholders, owners, and developers to determine if a project is financially and technically capable of delivering on project goals and managing project risks. A strong feasibility study will help secure funding from developers.  This webinar will cover some typical sources of funding for geothermal projects, with a focus on funding used in many East African projects, as well as grants, equity and debt.  Examples of funding used in East Africa include investment from the World Bank, the African Development Bank and the KfW Development Bank through the Geothermal Risk Mitigation Facility (GRMF).

The process of planning, specification, design, tendering, procurement, construction, and commissioning of power plants is described along with what information must be prepared, and the typical schedule for this process.  We explain, from our delivery of projects in Kenya and Indonesia, how the Owner’s Engineer anchors the delivery of this process along with the Owner / developer’s own internal team.

Title:  Wellhead power plants – some what’s, why’s, and how’s, and successes and things that could be better

Speaker:  Tracy Mills

Q & A schedule: 7 June 2022, 10 AM East Africa Time

We draw on our experience with small geothermal power plants in Kenya, Ethiopia and internationally to consider examples of how wellhead plants have been deployed.  We look at the technical processes they have employed that are often different from larger plants and consider what has been successful and where some plants have had difficulties. We also consider how large wellhead plants could be.
