The 3rd edition of the Geothermal Development Company Menengai Half-Marathon scheduled for September 21 in Nakuru has attracted over 3,500 participants. The event with a total prize money of Sh7 million will kick off at the Rift Valley Sports Club. Besides the 21-km race, the event will also feature the 10km run, 3.5km fun race, wheelchair race and 3km junior run for children.

Winners in the 21Km (both men and women) will pocket Sh150,000 each up from Sh100,000 offered last year.

Event coordinator, Nancy Juma, said Winfrida Kwamboka, who won the 2013 edition and Nairobi StanChart Marathon same year, is among top runners who have confirmed participation. The organisers also expect the newly crowned Commonwealth women’s marathon runner-up Caroline Kilel to take part. “The Menengai GDC Half Marathon has produced world class athletes who have gone ahead to conquer major races after participating in the event,” She said.

Proceeds raised from the race will be used for water and community health projects, according to Juma.
