A kick-off meeting was held to start the execution phase of the Lumut Balai Unit 3 geothermal power plant in Indonesia, targeting a COD by 2030.

PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGEO) held a kick-off meeting to officially start the execution phase of the 55-MW Lumut Balai Unit 3 Geothermal Power Plant, located in South Sumatra, Indonesia. According to PGEO Operations Director Ahmad Yani, the project has a target commercial operations date (COD) by 2030.

This development follows up shortly after the successful start of operations of the 55-MW Lumut Balai Unit 2 geothermal power plant in July 2025.

Moreover, the Lumut Balai Unit 3 has been included in the  2025-2029 Blue Book of the Ministry of National Development Planning (PPN / Bappenas), along with three other PGEO geothermal projects, as ThinkGeoEnergy reported. This means that the projects are eligible to secure foreign funding support through concessional loans. According to the listing, Lumut Balai Unit 3 will require an estimated capital of USD 305 million.

“This Kick-Off Meeting is a crucial moment to ensure the readiness of all aspects of the project, including technical aspects, permits, funding, and risk management. The development of new and renewable energy in Indonesia is now entering an increasingly crucial phase, in line with the national policy direction in the 2025-2034 RUPTL,” said Ahmad in an official statement.

PGEO has set a target of reaching 1 GW of total installed capacity in the next two or three years (a target that was initially set for 2025), and a long-term goal of 1.8 GW by 2033. Indonesia remains a fast-growing geothermal power market with a total installed capacity of 2742 MW as of the end of 2025 and an active pipeline of projects under development including expansion work in Dieng, Patuha, and Muara Laboh, as well as exploration drilling in greenfield sites like Hamiding.
